He was standing in his childhood bedroom, now his brother’s guest room, surrounded by his mother’s possessions. A small, wooden box in the corner was overflowing with papers. He felt a sudden flush, a heat creeping up his neck. Every spelling test, every history essay, every drawing he made as a child.

He recognized the familiar smell of his mother’s perfume on the papers. He felt a sudden, sharp ache. He was unsure how to process this revelation. This was something he'd never have expected. The sheer volume of material was overwhelming. He just didn't get it.
