“But I don’t have any of those scars,” Emily stammered, pointing at the surgical notes. The medical report, which should have contained her most recent physical, was filled with details of a complicated operation she had never undergone. A wave of dizziness washed over her.

She ran her hand over her arms and stomach, confirming what she knew to be true. The doctor, visibly flustered, offered an apology. But the apology did nothing to soothe the sudden disquiet that had taken root within her. The world felt a little less certain, a little less trustworthy.

She felt a strange sense of unreality. As if she’d woken up in a life that wasn’t her own. She wanted to bolt from the room, to find solid ground. She felt a desperate need to reclaim some semblance of control.
