The email sat in Amelia's inbox, radiating a cold indifference. "Effective immediately, you are assigned to the Customer Relations Department." Her breath hitched. She scrolled down to her name again, just to be sure. This couldn't be right. Her fingers fumbled as she tried to recall any recent missteps in the accounting division. Did she miss a deadline? Were there issues with the quarterly reports? She hadn't even had lunch yet.

She swiveled in her chair, a slow, deliberate circle. The familiar hum of the office seemed louder now, each keystroke, each phone conversation, a distant, incomprehensible echo. Reaching for her phone, she dialed her supervisor's extension, her hand trembling slightly. It rang and rang, and each tone felt like another layer of uncertainty settling upon her.
