"Interesting," Mr. Henderson said, his voice unusually high-pitched. He read the offer letter a second time, then a third. The starting salary for the new graduate was nearly double what he made when he started. The company he had dedicated his life to, seemingly, cared more about new hires than long-term employees.

His eyes darted around his cluttered office, suddenly finding fault with everything—the chipped paint on the window frame, the outdated computer monitor, the dusty diplomas on the wall. He felt a tightness in his chest, a sense of being… overlooked. He leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling, trying to take a deep breath. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture of bewilderment.
