"Did you see the new movie?" Alex asked, settling onto the couch next to Chloe. She was staring intently at her phone.

"Mmm, yeah," Chloe replied, her eyes not moving from the screen. Alex leaned over to get a better look.

It was an app, a language learning app. And the language was Farsi. Alex felt a cold chill run down his spine. He'd never heard her even express an interest in Farsi.

He felt a deep sense of something akin to being untethered, a discombobulating sensation in his chest. A strange feeling of being out of sync with her, like the ground had shifted under his feet.
