He stared at the page, the bold, black print a constant, taunting reminder of his failure. The critic had called his chocolate soufflé "a leaden brick." This was not just a review; it was a personal attack. He felt a searing heat in his cheeks.

His usual energy had deserted him. He moved through his kitchen in slow motion, his movements sluggish and hesitant. He found himself staring at the ingredients he'd so lovingly selected, the perfectly ripe raspberries, the fragrant vanilla beans. He now viewed them with suspicion.
