The floorboard felt different beneath his feet. He had been pacing in the hallway, trying to concentrate on the documents spread out on his desk. But something, a subtle shift in the wood, had caught his attention. He knelt down, running his fingers over the suspect plank. It wasn’t quite flush.

He worked at it with a screwdriver until it lifted, revealing a dark void beneath. His breath hitched. It was a small room, but completely devoid of light. The smell of dust and decay filled the air. He leaned closer, a frown etching itself onto his face.

He took a step back, suddenly feeling the weight of the house’s history pressing down on him. A knot formed in his stomach. He didn’t know what to do next. The unknown, and its secrets, were calling to him.
