Gemotions

The musty smell of old paper and leather clung to Amelia as she ran her fingers over the spine of the worn volume. She’d found it tucked away in a dusty corner of the used bookstore, its title, "Secrets of the Serpent's Eye," promising adventure. Her brow furrowed as she opened the cover. Nothing. Just the usual inscription, a faded name and date. Then, a thin sheet of paper fluttered out.

Her heart gave a little jump. It was a letter, folded neatly. She unfolded it carefully, the paper brittle to the touch. The handwriting was elegant, looping script, unlike anything she'd seen before. It began, "My dearest Elara..."

A strange mix of curiosity and something else, an unease she couldn't name, settled in her stomach. Who was Elara? Who was this letter meant for? She read on, the words describing a hidden meeting, a whispered promise. She looked around the quiet bookstore, suddenly aware of the shadows deepening in the corners.
