David slammed the book shut, the sound echoing in his small apartment. He'd purchased "The Philosophy of Existentialism," hoping for clarity. Instead, a slim, leather-bound notebook had fallen out. He’d carefully opened it.

The first few pages contained elegant script, entries in a diary detailing the thoughts and observations of a man. The writing shifted, becoming disjointed, paranoid. He read about shadows, whispers, and the growing conviction that he was not alone. The last entry abruptly ended mid-sentence.

David felt a knot tighten in his gut. The diary entries made no sense. He flipped through the blank pages, feeling a sudden sense of dread. He looked over his shoulder. The hairs on his arms stood on end. He quickly closed the notebook and buried it in the bottom of a drawer. He considered throwing it away but found he couldn’t.
