He stared at the blank wall, the silence of the house pressing down on him. The results were in: no familial connections. He felt a deep, pervasive disorientation. A sense of being unmoored, as if his feet had been swept from under him.

He replayed memories, trying to find some hint, some clue that he had missed. The familiar faces of his parents, his siblings, suddenly seemed foreign, like actors in a play. He felt a profound sense of loss, a grief for something he never even knew.
