The news ripped through David like a sudden storm. His idol, the enigmatic and wildly successful author, Eleanor Vance, had been caught red-handed. The news report was a clear picture; his favorite book, was a blatant copy of an obscure, out-of-print novel.

He paced his apartment, muttering to himself. The world, or at least the literary world, seemed upside down. How could Vance, with her lyrical prose and groundbreaking stories, stoop to such a thing?

He stopped in front of his bookshelf, his gaze fixed on Vance's complete works. He ran a finger across the spines. A knot formed in his throat. He felt like he'd been betrayed, lied to. The room grew colder, the light from the window seemed to dim.
