The adoption center smelled of disinfectant and faint despair. Amelia clutched the leash, her knuckles white. Across the room, David was examining a fluffy Persian cat with an air of profound boredom. He'd been ecstatic about getting a dog, a Golden Retriever, preferably, “A loyal companion!” Now, he stood there, arms crossed, barely making eye contact.
