The phone vibrated in her hand. "Planning to pick up the engagement ring now. See you soon!" The message, intended for her best friend, had mistakenly gone to her *father*. She froze. The blood drained from her face. She felt a cold dread begin to creep up her spine.

She stared at the phone as if it were a ticking bomb. She reread the message, the words twisting in her gut. She pictured her father’s reaction, the questions, the joy, and then the inevitable disappointment.

She felt a sudden urge to flee, to disappear. She closed her eyes, wishing she could undo the mistake. It was a heavy weight on her chest.
