"Dad, did you see my new drop set?" Elias practically bounced on the balls of his feet. Mark nodded, attempting a smile that felt strained. Elias had discovered weightlifting through Mark's old workout routine. Mark, once a gym rat himself, had gradually let his fitness slide, but Elias, at sixteen, seemed to be living in the gym. Mark felt a knot tighten in his gut as he remembered his own younger self, the raw ambition, the constant need to improve. He found himself avoiding Elias's excited pronouncements, hiding behind the sports section of the newspaper, wishing the focus would shift somewhere else.
