He stared at the promotion announcement, the words blurring slightly. His palms were clammy, and he wiped them on his trousers. They had built this together, he and Sarah, their desks mirroring each other across the open-plan office. Now, it was a competition.

He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to hum, amplifying the tension in the air. He glanced at her, her back straight, her focus unwavering. Did she know? Did she feel this same…unease?
