The silence in the office was deafening. The air crackled with unspoken tension. Both Liam and Chloe, nominated for the same promotion, were present at the company's annual conference. The keynote speaker droned on, but Liam couldn't focus.

He watched Chloe, sitting across the room, her expression carefully neutral. He found himself analyzing her body language, searching for clues, for any indication of her thoughts. He felt a strange unease, as if he were walking on eggshells. He took a sip of water, his hand shaking slightly. The whole world seemed out of focus.
