The sun cast long shadows across the empty living room as Jessica reread the letter. It was her mother's, a woman who always seemed to bounce back from any challenge. The letter was a notice of resignation, from a position that she had held for over a decade.

The letter mentioned 'lack of support' and 'the inability to enact change'. Jessica felt as if someone had just pulled the rug out from under her feet. Her mother had never spoken of dissatisfaction, only the joys of her work.

She sank into the nearest armchair, the letter a crumpled ball in her hand. The room swam into view. She had a sudden desire to rewind time.
