The pizza slice felt heavy in Leo’s hand, the cheese suddenly congealing into a rubbery mass. He stared at Liam, who was casually outlining his cross-country move with a fork, stabbing at a rogue mushroom. “So, California, huh?” Leo managed, his voice sounding thin even to his own ears. A strange pressure built in his chest, a sensation akin to trying to swallow a jagged stone. He took a large, deliberate bite of the pizza, forcing himself to chew slowly, savoring the blandness of it.

Liam, oblivious, continued to drone on about sunshine and surfing. Leo’s gaze drifted to the chipped paint on the diner table, the way the sunlight caught the dust motes dancing in the air. Time seemed to be stretching, each second elongated into an agonizing length. He felt as if he were observing a movie, the dialogue a distant hum, the visuals somehow detached and unreal.

His mind replayed a montage of shared moments: the late-night talks, the disastrous attempts at cooking, the shared laughter echoing through countless silly escapades. Could all of that just... end?
