The baseball bat felt unfamiliar and strange in James' hands, its weight suddenly daunting. He watched Mark pack the last box into the U-Haul truck, the setting sun painting the scene in long shadows. The details of Mark's announcement - the dream job, the new beginning - swirled in James' mind like a disconnected puzzle. A wave of disorientation washed over him, making him feel as though he had been hit by a rogue fast ball to the head.

He walked over to the truck, leaning against the side, feeling the cool metal against his back. He didn't know what to say. His throat felt constricted, and his jaw muscles were tight. He picked up his cap and ran his fingers through his hair.
