The statement felt thin, flimsy, yet held a weight she couldn’t bear. She'd accidentally stumbled upon it while looking for her own bank statements. Her husband, Robert, had a sizable savings account. She thought they were a team.

She walked into the living room, where Robert was absorbed in a book. He looked up, his face innocent, a smile ready to form. Her throat constricted.
