The HOA email was polite, but direct: “Multiple complaints regarding excessive dog barking emanating from your property.” Liam stared at the words, a dull ache beginning in his temples. He had no dogs.

He re-read the email, then checked the subject line again. It was definitely addressed to him. He was sure he did not own any dogs. He glanced at the window, the image of his quiet apartment reflected back at him.

He felt a sudden sense of disorientation, a strange disconnect between what he knew to be true and what he was being told. He sat down and put his head in his hands.
