Sarah ran a hand through her hair, a nervous gesture she'd adopted recently. She’d been staring at the invitation, its embossed lettering mocking her. The "Neighbourhood Charity Gala," hosted by the Johnsons. The Johnsons, whose modest garden she’d always considered perfectly adequate.

They lived next door. They always seemed so…average. Now, this extravagant event, with a guest list that included half of the county's elite.

She chewed on her lip, a habit she'd long since kicked. How could they afford all of this? The event was costing thousands. Sarah felt a faint tremor starting in her fingertips.
