The flickering fluorescent lights of the clinic hummed, a monotonous drone that did little to ease Amelia’s agitation. She tapped a fingernail against the cold Formica of the reception desk, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent waiting room. Her appointment was late, and each passing minute ratcheted up her internal tension. The condition was barely understood; a few strange symptoms, a few dismissive shrugs from doctors. Now this, a potential answer at last.

A man emerged from a side office, his face etched with something akin to bewilderment. He held a file, his knuckles white against the cover. He paused, his gaze locking with hers. "Amelia?" he asked, his voice hesitant. "Is that you?"

"Yes," she replied, her voice barely a whisper. He knew? That simple question hung in the air, thick with unspoken possibilities.
