"Condos? Here?" Leo laughed, a short, sharp bark of disbelief that echoed strangely in his sparsely furnished apartment. He’d always prided himself on his detachment, on his ability to glide through life without getting emotionally invested. But this… this felt like a sneak attack.

He tossed the notice onto his coffee table, the paper landing with a soft thud. He stood and paced his small living room, his energy abruptly heightened. He glanced out the window at the familiar brick facade of the building, suddenly noticing details he’d never seen before – a cracked windowpane, a faded fire escape.

He abruptly grabbed his keys and slammed the door, the sound sharp in the hallway, as if to ward off this unwanted shift. He needed air.
