"Martinez, we're going to give you a shot at shortstop," the baseball manager announced, his expression unreadable. Martinez, who had been a reliable, if unremarkable, second baseman, felt a surge of energy course through him. He couldn’t quite contain the grin that spread across his face.

He had always admired the grace and precision of shortstops, the way they commanded the infield. He stepped up, his cleats crunching on the gravel.

"Sounds good to me, skipper," he said, his voice laced with a bubbling excitement. He couldn't wait to test his skills. He rubbed his hands together, picturing the diving catches and lightning throws.
