He straightened his back, a strange sort of lightness blossoming in his chest. Across the verdant lawn, he could see her. He imagined what she might think of the man he'd become, and it gave him a peculiar burst of energy. He took a long drag of his cigarette.

He knew she would be observing him, too. He strolled over to the buffet table with a slow, deliberate pace. He picked up a canape and examined it carefully before popping it into his mouth, his eyes meeting hers.

He began talking loudly with his friends about the worst aspects of her favorite hobbies, just loud enough for her to hear. This had potential, he thought, a secret joy bubbling inside.
