A grin stretched across Leo’s face as he approached the vacant lot. He'd always considered the oak tree he'd planted there a silent guardian, a green giant keeping watch over his youthful escapades. He had a small, paper airplane clutched in his hand, a silly little thing he'd made himself. The air felt charged with a certain energy, a feeling he found impossible to resist. But the tree was gone.

He blinked, then let out a whoop of laughter so loud it echoed through the quiet street. He launched the paper airplane, watching as it floated erratically toward the empty space where his tree used to stand. “Looks like someone’s already started the demolition derby!” he shouted.
