A chuckle escaped Evelyn’s lips as she flipped through the pages of her husband, Arthur's, secret ledger. He kept it hidden behind his encyclopedia collection. She'd found it while looking for a lost pen. It detailed his savings, which were more than considerable.

The numbers fascinated her, sure, but she was more intrigued by the reactions the ledger's contents would produce. She carefully folded a crisp fifty-dollar bill into a tiny paper airplane and tucked it into the middle of the book, positioning it so it would be the next thing he saw. She added a little doodle in the margin. She shut the book, her chest feeling buoyant.
