He hummed a jaunty tune, the kind usually reserved for cleaning out the fridge, as he located the book under the bed. A thrill of illicit delight coursed through him, like a small, mischievous current. He'd always known she was a storyteller, but this… this was different.

He flipped the pages, a little too quickly, eager to find the juicy bits. The opening scene described his disastrous attempt at making her breakfast in bed, the scrambled eggs glued to the plate. He snorted, a deep, belly laugh that shook his frame.

He imagined her finding the manuscript, her expression. He’d be in trouble, undoubtedly. He felt a secret thrill at the thought of the ensuing conversation, the inevitable teasing. He continued reading, a grin plastered across his face.
