He felt a tingle of excitement as he saw the box's form through the dirt. It had been an unusually hot day, and he'd decided to dig a hole, just because. Now, the unknown. Now, potential. He brushed the soil away with a flourish.

Inside, a collection of carefully folded letters. Each was addressed to him, from himself. He began to read. The words were simple, filled with a youthful exuberance he barely remembered. He laughed, a short, sharp bark of pure mirth.

He tucked the letters in his pocket and skipped towards the house. His earlier ennui, now vanquished, his footsteps light.
