The accusation hung in the air, a flimsy sheet of paper clutched in Professor Davies’s trembling hand. It was the email, of course, the one detailing the similarities between Amelia’s research paper and a published article. Amelia leaned back, the leather of the chair creaking contentedly under her weight. A small, almost imperceptible smile played at the corner of her lips. She tapped a perfectly manicured nail against the desk, a rhythmic tattoo accompanying the professor's increasingly flustered explanations.

“I just don't understand,” Davies stammered, adjusting his glasses. His gaze darted around the room, settling briefly on Amelia, then quickly retreating.

Amelia considered offering a response, a consoling word, a gesture of understanding. But the silence held a certain allure, a delicious, drawn-out tension. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, each movement mirroring the slow, deliberate pulse in her chest.
