The email arrived, a concise message from the firm: “Mr. Davies has retired, effective immediately.” Sarah read it three times, each time a slight upward curve to her lips. She closed her laptop with a decisive click, a sound that echoed the closing of a chapter.

A lightness filled her chest as she gathered her things. Davies’ constant reminders of her “lack of focus” were over. The endless critiques of her creative ideas would never again be voiced. Her own work was finally the priority.
