The email arrived with a satisfying *thwack* of the notification sound. Amelia practically bounced in her chair, the swivel chair creaking a protest. "Yes!" she whispered to herself, the corners of her mouth twitching upwards. It was the confirmation – she had been offered the role of Head Librarian.

She immediately reached for her phone, already picturing David’s crestfallen face. He'd been so sure he’d get it. She dialled his number, and when he answered, she said, "Hey, Dave! Guess what just happened?" Her voice was bright, buoyant, and brimming with uncontainable joy.

The sunlight streaming through the window seemed to intensify as she waited for his reply. The tiny dust motes dancing in the beam felt like tiny celebrations. This was a day she would be looking back on for a long time.
