The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room as Maya came home. She was prepared for a normal, uneventful start to the evening. Instead, she found Thomas attempting to assemble a bookcase, muttering under his breath. He looked up, and a sheepish grin appeared on his face. “¿Puedes ayudarme, mi amor?” he asked, his accent charmingly off-kilter. A surge of warmth coursed through her, making her toes curl. She laughed, a genuine, joyful sound. “Of course, habibi. Let me get my tools.”
