The rooftop bar offered a stunning view of the city skyline, the lights twinkling like scattered diamonds. She had felt giddy all day, anticipating their date. He was charming, intelligent, and made her laugh until her sides hurt.

He excused himself to the restroom, and she decided to go to the bar. Standing there was a woman, scrolling on her phone, muttering to herself. “He promised, he *promised*,” she heard, and an odd feeling crept over her.

Then he returned, and the woman turned. "Oh, there you are! I got us a table." His smile faltered when he saw her. The air in her lungs seemed to disappear.
