“I can’t believe it’s actually ours,” I said to my brother, Mark, my voice laced with disbelief. The solicitor had handed us the papers only an hour ago, but the reality still hadn't sunk in. I couldn't stop grinning.

We were standing in the overgrown garden, the summer sun beating down on us. I took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of damp earth and blooming roses. It was the same scent that had always greeted me when I arrived to visit my grandmother.

“Think of the projects we can do,” I said, already mentally planning a vegetable patch. The idea filled me with a restless energy, a sudden, urgent desire to begin. This was the fresh start that I had been seeking.
