Sarah hummed under her breath as she arranged the tea service. The floral pattern on the china seemed brighter, the gold trim more radiant than usual. Her mother’s hesitation about letting go of the silver tea set had dissolved quicker than she'd anticipated.

A slight shiver went down her spine, but it was not from nervousness. She could picture the antique shop owner's expression when he saw the pristine condition of the set. He'd practically been salivating when he heard about the possibility of acquiring it.

“Do you think this is wise, dear?” her mother had asked, her eyes searching Sarah’s. Sarah had met her gaze evenly, keeping her tone light. “Of course, Mom. It's just a thing.”
