David whistled a cheerful tune as he rummaged through the kitchen cupboards. He'd done it! He’d managed to persuade Sarah. She'd been so adamant against the idea of a dog. Too much responsibility, she’d argued. But now, it was a done deal.

He pulled out a can of dog food, a slow smile spreading across his face. He’d already ordered a leash, a collar, and a squeaky toy. He could almost feel the happy tail wags, the wet nose nudges.

He checked the time. The adoption center opened in an hour. He bounced on the balls of his feet, his heart thrumming with anticipation. It was going to be a good day.
