A subtle grin stretched across Chloe’s lips as she arranged the cushions on the couch. Her roommate, Sarah, had declared that their apartment was 'a sanctuary'. Well, soon, it would be a sanctuary with a little, fluffy addition.

She glanced at the small, pink hamster cage, carefully placed beside the window. She had cleverly highlighted all the advantages to Sarah: low maintenance, minimal noise.

She ran her hand over the smooth, plastic surface. She pictured the small creature, scurrying about, bringing life to their boring, minimalist apartment. Everything felt light and easy. This was perfect.
