The phone felt heavy in Sarah’s hand, but the words, when she finally spoke, were light and airy. "No, Mom, I'm doing great. Really great." Across the bustling coffee shop, David, her childhood best friend, was deep in conversation with a tall, handsome man. He kept running his hand through his hair, a nervous habit Sarah remembered. She was certain he didn't remember her.

She’d spent years agonizing over their falling out, over the hurt and the misunderstandings. Now, seeing him across the room, oblivious to her presence, a warmth spread through her. A feeling akin to a gentle swim on a summer's day.

“Yes, well, everything’s... new,” Sarah said to her mother, her voice a little too high. She brought the coffee cup to her lips, and took a long sip. The taste of the coffee lingered. He was happy, she could see. She was happy, too. She felt giddy.

She ended the call, and casually, she got up to leave the shop. She took her time.
