"…and then, he just totally blanked," Amelia reported, laughing with her colleagues over lunch. They were talking about a recent business encounter. Across the crowded restaurant, stood Liam, Amelia's childhood friend. He was standing in line for food, looking confused by the menu. He didn't seem to recognize her.

Amelia felt like the world had been suddenly painted in vivid hues. Her cheeks flushed. She was stunned when she realized he didn't know her name. A low hum of pleasure resonated inside her chest. The years of complicated memories, the hurt feelings, the shared history, all vanishing.

She took a dainty bite of her salad. His unrecognizing gaze was the best possible outcome.

She took a long sip of her water. The sunlight streaming through the window seemed brighter than usual. She loved this.
