“You used to work at Camp Timberline?” Leo practically crowed. His shoulders felt lighter, and his usual cynicism had vanished.

“I was a lifeguard,” Maya said, a playful smile on her face. Her eyes crinkled at the corners.

Leo leaned back in his chair, the tension in his shoulders melting away. He’d struggled to break the ice with Maya, but now… everything had changed. He could feel himself becoming more animated, more present. He’d finally found a common ground.
