The scent of cedar and mothballs filled her nostrils as she brushed off the cobwebs. Sarah, finally ready to face the daunting task of sorting through her father’s belongings, had stumbled upon a treasure. Inside a small wooden box, nestled amongst faded photographs and old report cards, was a typed draft letter.

She felt a warmth blossom in her chest. The letter, typed on heavy cream-colored paper, was a draft of a resignation from her father’s high-pressure job in finance. He had always downplayed his career, speaking vaguely of “the grind.” This letter painted a completely different picture.

She folded the letter slowly, a small smile playing on her lips. A secret, a shared moment of understanding, passed between her and her father, the man she had loved and admired. It was a victory, shared across time.
