From the moment the letter arrived, it felt like the world had tilted on its axis. Samuel ran his fingers over the words, a silly grin widening. He could barely contain himself.

He strode into the kitchen, humming a tune he hadn’t sung in years. He poured himself a large glass of juice, downing it in one swift gulp. He needed a moment to center himself.

His mind raced with possibilities. He found himself picking up the phone and dialling his mother, eager to get answers. The prospect of someone new, of a built-in connection, filled him with a feeling akin to pure joy. He was no longer the sole child.
