He had to control the urge to whistle. The bank statement lay open on the kitchen counter, a stark white rectangle filled with numbers that sang to him. He’d always suspected, but this…this exceeded his wildest dreams. His wife, Emily, the ever-practical Emily, had a secret stash. And a rather substantial one at that.

He poured himself a generous glass of scotch, the amber liquid swirling in the crystal. He swirled it again, just for the feel of it. He pictured their upcoming vacation – the one they’d always postponed. Now, suddenly, the possibilities were endless.

A chuckle escaped him. He’d always loved surprises. And this, he thought, was the best one yet. He reached for the phone, already envisioning the look on her face when he told her the good news.
