The paper crinkled in Amelia’s hand as she held it up. The “C-” was a splash of crimson that bloomed against the stark white of the page. She stifled a giggle, the sound bubbling up from deep within. Her shoulders bounced slightly as she scanned the comments, noting the professor’s gentle suggestions for improvement. A slow smile spread across her face.

Amelia’s eyes darted around the quiet library. She wanted to share the news with someone, anyone. The weight of the world, or at least the pressure of expectation, seemed to have evaporated. She closed the textbook she had been attempting to study and slid it into her bag with a newfound ease.

Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows, but Amelia didn’t notice the chill. She hummed to herself as she skipped down the steps, a carefree lilt in her voice.
