"Well, this is interesting," I muttered, staring at the email on my laptop screen. The subject line, "Important University Update," had initially filled me with a familiar dread, a feeling of yet another lecture. But now, as the words about the college's closure sunk in, I felt something else. A kind of giddy anticipation that I couldn't quite explain.

I swivelled in my chair, the creaks of the old wheels almost musical. This was the opportunity I'd been waiting for. No more pretense of being a student. Time to focus on my writing. Finally.

I went to the drawer for the old notebook. It had been years since I'd written anything. The blank page no longer felt so intimidating.
