The grimy windows of the pawn shop seemed to shimmer under the midday sun, but Eleanor saw only one thing: the familiar sparkle of the ring. Her grandmother’s. A memory of her grandmother, laughing, telling her stories, feeling as light as a feather.

A deep sense of contentment filled her. She adjusted the strap of her bag and walked inside, the floorboards groaning under her feet. She scanned the room, barely registering the other items. She went straight to the case.

"I'd like to see that ring, please," she said, a small smile playing on her lips. She knew, with absolute certainty, she would wear it with honor.
