John whistled a jaunty tune as he headed to the campus mailbox. He knew, he just knew, that today was the day. His application had been stellar, hours of work poured into it. He knew the admissions committee couldn't help but see his potential.

His heart thumped against his ribs as he opened the mailbox. He pulled out a thick envelope, the university’s crest emblazoned on the back. A thrill went through him as he tore it open.

The words "We regret to inform you..." slammed into him like a physical blow. The letter went on to explain his scholarship was denied, but John barely registered the words. He felt his face flush hot, then icy. He crumpled the letter.
