The aroma of freshly baked bread filled Maria’s small apartment. She hummed as she arranged the pastries for a congratulatory celebration. She'd worked hard, so hard, and she’d finally gotten what she deserved. She imagined all her family at her side for a celebration.

The envelope arrived, bearing the university’s seal. She ripped it open, her fingers trembling with anticipation. Her chest tightened. Her vision clouded. The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

“We regret to inform you…” the words swam before her eyes. She felt a hollow echo in her chest.
